Safety prerequisites for vacuum seal bags


Whether vacuum seal bags can be safely used for microwave heating depends on the bag material and labeling. The following are specific safety guidelines:

Must confirm the “microwave safety” label: vacuum bags must be clearly marked with “microwaveable” or indicate the heat resistance temperature (such as heat resistance above 120°C).


1. Material requirements:


Safe materials: Food-grade polypropylene (PP) or specially designed vacuum storage bags can withstand high microwave temperatures.

Prohibited materials: Ordinary polyethylene (PE) bags and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) bags may melt or release toxic substances (such as bisphenol A) at high temperatures.


2. Operating specifications (if the bag meets microwave safety standards) be sure to open or pierce:


Poke several small holes in the bag before heating, or open the bag mouth to release steam pressure and prevent bursting.

Control heating parameters:

Use medium and low power (400W-600W) to avoid high temperatures that damage the taste of food or cause local overheating.

‌Heating time‌: about 2-4 minutes for a whole corn, and shorter for small pieces of food as appropriate.

‌Avoid complete sealing‌: direct sealing and heating is prohibited, otherwise steam accumulation may cause explosion.


3. Situations where microwave heating is prohibited


‌No clear label‌: If the package does not indicate “microwave safety” or heat-resistant temperature, the food must be taken out and placed in a microwave-specific container for heating.

‌Ordinary vacuum packaging bags‌: Most vacuum bags are not microwave-specific, have poor chemical stability at high temperatures, and may release toxic substances.


4. Alternative solutions


‌Replace container‌: Move the food to a ceramic/glass bowl and cover it with microwave-specific plastic wrap (with holes).

‌Special microwave bags‌: Buy food-grade sealed bags or vacuum seal storage bags marked “microwave-suitable”.

‌Summary‌: vacuum seal bags can only be used safely if they are clearly marked “microwave safe” and the operating specifications (opening/piercing + medium and low power) are strictly followed. If there is no label, do not risk heating, and transfer to a safe container first.

‌Nylon (PA/PE composite)‌


120-140°C

Punch resistance, high and low temperature resistance, multi-layer structure (such as PE+nylon+PET) enhances barrier and durability

Thawing of frozen food, high temperature cooking


Polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC)


≤140°C

High oxygen barrier and moisture resistance, suitable for food that needs to be kept fresh for a long time

Dry goods and meat are kept fresh and then heated


Prohibited materials

Polyethylene (PE): Ordinary PE bags are only heat-resistant to 80-110°C and are easy to melt and deform (especially when sealed);

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC): High temperature releases hydrogen chloride (HCl) gas and plasticizers, posing a risk of poisoning;

Polyester (PET): Puncture resistance but limited heat resistance, not specially designed for microwaves.
